Cap Haitien

For the first time in 12 years, the violence that has been raging in Haiti has forced the closure of our beautiful primary school in Croix-des-bouquets, most of the community having fled to safer areas. Incredibly, the buildings and equipment remain untouched and have not been vandalized or pillaged, which should allow us to quickly resume offering classes as soon as the security situation allows it. For now, we continue with our mission in the North of the country, where many families have relocated and where we are in the process of buying a building which we will initially turn into a kindergarten. Your support is more important than ever in order to allow these children living in such precarious conditions, to find a certain sense of normalcy by offering them a safe and structured educational environment.

Your generosity and the involvement of our volunteers enabled us to raise over $16,000 this year! We used 100% of the donations received to make a first deposit to acquire a building in the city of Cap Haitien, where many families from Port-au-Prince and its surroundings have fled. One of our donors also generously sponsored one of our most gifted students, allowing her to continue her secondary studies.

The violence that has been raging in Haiti for almost 3 years now has caused a large part of our community to flee to safer areas. Despite this sad new reality, our team on the ground has continued its mission at its own risk. They did what was necessary to provide the quality education promised to every child who showed up at our door. As a result, we managed to complete the 2022-2023 academic year for some forty of them. Given the security situation is not improving, we still don’t know what this year will bring, but your support is more important than ever and we remain enormously proud of the students, teachers and our dear director Nelcame, who continue to hold out under unimaginable conditions.

Your generosity and the involvement of our volunteers enabled us to raise over $11,000 this year! We used 100% of the donations received for infrastructure maintenance and renovation, including a major project to rebuild the school’s exterior walls. Two of you also generously sponsored two of our most vulnerable students. Your ongoing support has enabled them to pursue their education, even though one of them had to leave the school during the year. Thank you.

We’ve got great news for all our regular donors: we’ve officially become a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency this year! From now on, we’ll send you an official receipt entitling you to a tax deduction or credit on your income tax return for all donations made annually.

Thank you again for your precious support!

We are proud to inform you that despite the ongoing violence and insecurity in Haiti and specifically in the area surrounding our school, we ended the 2021-2022 academic year with some great news. Indeed, last year marked our first cohort to complete the full 9-year primary school cycle since the opening of the school. All of our graduating students successfully passed the official state exam! Unfortunately, the current disastrous security situation has made it impossible to start the new school year, we are however ready on our end to offer the first level of secondary school, this means that for the first time this year, we will be both a primary and secondary school. Huge congratulations to our students, teachers and wonderful principal Nelcame, who are all doing incredible work in such a challenging context.

Your generosity and the involvement of our volunteers enabled us to raise over $10,000 this year! We used 100% of the donations received to do some maintenance and upgrade to our electric infrastructure, including an additional solar panel and batteries, to get badly needed classroom supplies and furniture, as well as to build a new principal’s office for the school. Two of of donors also generously sponsored two of our most vulnerable students and by doing so, are allowing them to stay in school and pursue their studies. Thank you.

After a year of insecurity during which we could not attract attention with a large construction project, a respite in the violence and the resumption of some economic activity this summer finally allowed us to use funding received from Ministère des Relations internationales et de La Francophonie (MRIF). In partnership with the University of Sherbrooke Group for Internal Cooperation (GCIUS), we built a large 6,300-Gallon tank that allows the school to supply water to the local community for more than a week at a time!

Despite the ongoing socio-political turmoil in Haiti (culminating with the murder of the president last summer and the ensuing deterioration of the security situation), we are proud to announce that we opened our doors in October, for our tenth school year in our beautiful primary school in Haiti! Thanks to the incredible resilience and dedication of our Haitian partners, we now have 140 students and a dozen teachers and employees!

Your generosity and the involvement of our volunteers enabled us to raise close to $8,000 this year! We used 100% of the donations received to complete our new 2-story building which holds 6 classrooms. Two of our donors also generously sponsored two of our most vulnerable students and by doing so, are allowing them to stay in school and to continue their studies.

Although we were not able to send volunteers to Haïti again this year, we welcomed 4 interns from the Université de Sherbrooke. They worked on creative ways to adapt our fundraising campaign to the COVID-19 restrictions.

Your generosity and the involvement of our volunteers enabled us to raise close to $17,000 this year! We used 100% of the donations received to cement the courtyard, to finish the ground flour of the large 2-story building which will eventually hold 10 classrooms, and to start the construction of a new 2-story building which will hold 6 classrooms to replace our 3 original semi-permanent classrooms.

Although we were not able to send volunteers to Haïti this year, we have developed internship positions in partnership with Université de Sherbrooke, to coordinate and adapt our fundraising campaign to COVID-19 restrictions. In the fall, we had two interns who did a great job making up for the fundraising events which we had to cancel in the winter/spring.
